There has been much pessimism in the news regarding stock performance during the recent bearish market. These sentiments are unfounded! There are stocks that do well, mostly companies with increased earnings and profits, which can happen in bear markets.

A review of last weeks Down But Not Out picks:

These are decent results, but time will tell if this scan if good by being consistent.

For the stocks in the top and bottom bands of a half year relative strength scan, the down but not out method seems better than the americanbulls.com method. Only time will tell if this is consistant.

American Bulls

I wish I had known about this website last year, AmericanBulls.com has an interesting presentation of it's buy and sell signals. Unfortunately, there are many flaws in it's method of presenting price gains. For instance, it doesn't consider broker fees in it's trades, nor does it consider the costs of shorting stocks. However, I'm impressed with it's application of statistical analysis of only stocks price behavior. \

In comparing buy/sell timings with my scans and the ones from American Bulls, they both gave similar results for the stocks I've narrowed down, those in the upper and lower RSI scan. However, my technique does not generally work for stocks not in this category while the techniques used by AmericanBulls.com seem to apply to all stocks.

I've decided to build a similar scan for stocks based on the candlesticker.com methods that the site americanbulls.com applies. The results are:

Of all these stocks, INPC seems the most promising. I'll likely place this trade if the stock price is above the open price near the end of day.

The results for the down but not out scan have changed slightly as I've loosened the scan requirements in considering three days down behavior. An extra day is now included under special conditions. The results of the scan now are:
